Now sing along to the tune of the Flintstones cartoon...Fergussons. Meet the Fergussons. They're the modern type of family. From the town of Sydney, They're a page right out of history. When you're with the Fergussons You'll have a yabba dabba doo time. A dabba doo time. You'll have a gay old time! This is Shayne, a very talented photographer (you can see more of his work here) and Adrian a very talented architect. They are my favorite couple. I love them. They are my family more than anyone I know. You can tell from the photo that they love each other. And without a doubt they will one day make the best parents ever....What is so strange to me is that they want to get married. Well I find it strange anyone wants to get married really but I am so looking forward to their wedding day...I know I will cry... But wait... thats right, they are not allowed to get married in Australia because they are 'gay'.Now that's what I find really weird...out of all the people who should be together raising children its these two. I couldn't imagine a more loving, caring, communicative and strong family unit than they would create together, where the children would be safe and nurtured and free of all of the incipient dramas that I have seen occur so frequently in so many other young families. What's even stranger is that I am even having to point out this complete discrimination on my blog...Why am I being deprived the joy of seeing two of my dear and loyal friends 'tie the knot'? When I have had to sit through innumerable 'Dimboola's' and then watch the marriage disintegrate within months in a hail of insults, hurt feelings and despair...why then am I not allowed to attend an event that I know would be stylish and happy and that the marriage would last at least longer than a few months...Apparently people that are as ill fitting as they can be are allowed to get married without any kind of interference from any federal, state or humane society body intervening on the grounds that its all wrong and will all end in tears. Yet my friends Shayne and Adrian are not able to benefit from the same legal status even though they will probably never be as much a drag on the system that many hetrosexual couples are. This just seems quite arbitrary and unfair to me.Ginette Snow is showing her work on same sex parent families with her exhibition "Just Families" which will be installed at INDEX just after my exhibition comes down. I think it will definitely be worth catching. In this day and age we surely are beyond categorising people by the colour of their skin, their sexual preference, their disabilities or indeed their gender. Surely? In light of what I know and what I comprehend on an instinctive level I believe the politicians barring the way from same sex couples marrying and having children together really need to rethink their reasons to objecting to same sex marriages. If its simply an irrational fear of homosexuality then I think they should spend sometime with my friends Shayne and Adrian because I can guarantee that after a very short time with them that the question of sexual preference becomes irrelevant in light of the beauty of these guys hearts...
